The palace started out as a private residence for the Duke of Buckingham. It was built in 1703 and stayed within his family for over 150 years. In 1761, the building was bought by King George III as a home for his wife, Queen Charlotte.Over the years the palace has gone through a lot of changes and in the 19th century three wings were added to it in order to form the courtyard as it's known today.

The east front was added at the start of the 20th century and features the well-known balcony.

Queen Victoria was the first monarch to make Buckingham Palace her primary residence when she moved in, in 1837.

Architect John Nash designed Trafalgar Square as a cultural space, open to the public. Its focal point is Nelson's Column with its statue of Admiral Lord Nelson, gazing down on everything below honouring his victory against the Spanish and French at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805.
